MALTA

The project is part of the regulatory monitoring of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), aimed at assessing the ecological status of the coastal water masses of Malta. It mobilizes two key expertise: macroalgal habitats (Lithophyllum byssoides, rhodoliths, coastal communities) and mobile benthic organisms.

This monitoring contributes to improving scientific knowledge and provides the Maltese and European authorities with robust data to meet regulatory obligations.

setec énergie environnement has carried out an environmental monitoring mission covering two complementary aspects:

  • Study of the benthic fauna of the soft substrates: sampling by bucket or carter on a network of stations, laboratory treatment, taxonomic analysis and counting of the macrofauna.
  • Study of macroalgae and associated habitats: application of the CARLIT index on rocky shores, observation and mapping of the belts of Lithophyllum byssoides, video acquisitions for the characterization of rhodoliths.

The data are used to calculate the DCE indices and are returned in reports validated by the reference experts.

Challenge

Reliably assessing the ecological status of Malta’s coastal waters is a key challenge in meeting the requirements of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and in permanently guiding the management of the marine environment.
