EDF – Electricité de France

2019-2023

Corsica, FRANCE

In order to secure the electricity supply to Sardinia, Corsica and Italy, the Italian electricity network operator Terna and the manager of the French electricity network EDF The project named SACOI 3 (SArdaigne COrse Italie) envisages the renewal of the installations. The project includes the construction of new equipment, the replacement of electrical cables that are more than 10 years old, and the heavy maintenance and servicing of equipment. The project covers the French and Italian territories, at sea and on land.

This study concerns the marine part of the French territorial waters (12 MN), which includes the French marine part of the new underwater link between Corsica and Italy (100 km in total, 2 cables), and the French marine part of the new underwater link between Corsica and Sardinia (15-20 km in total, 2 cables).

setec énergie environnement has carried out the following tasks:

  • Marine fauna and flora inventories in the sectors of Bastia and Bonifacio by diving or through the deployment of remotely operated vehicles (ROV) from the surface.
  • In situ measurement and sampling campaigns (topographic survey, sediment granulometry) completed the data acquired in order to assess the sensitivity of the biological components present in the two study sectors.

The studies were integrated into the impact assessment, the Natura 2000 impact statement, the protected species derogation dossier of the project on the marine components, and the ERC proposal for measures.

The field missions also made it possible to investigate the existing SACOI2 cables and to define the best strategy once they were decommissioned: either dismantling them or keeping them in place on the seabed.

Challenge

Accompanying the security of the Mediterranean electrical interconnections while preserving marine ecosystems.
