Abidjan, The Ivory Coast

Faced with sustained demographic growth and rapid urbanisation, the District of Abidjan is experiencing a significant increase in household waste management needs. As part of the Sustainable Improvement Programme for Sanitation and Drainage in the city of Abidjan, the’ONAD awarded the Terrabo–setec consortium the preparation of the territory's solid waste management master plan.

This study aims to provide ANAGED with a reference strategic document to plan investments and sustainably guide the organisation of waste management on a metropolitan scale.

Our missions are as follows:

  • Carrying out a comprehensive assessment of the demographic, social, environmental, institutional and economic context of the area; ;
  • Analysis of waste streams, existing infrastructure, collection and recovery systems; ;
  • Assessment of current and future projects likely to influence the organisation of waste management at the District scale.
  • Development of 3 scenarios for the optimisation of pre-collection, collection, transport/transfer, treatment and recovery of solid waste; ;
  • Detailed study of the selected scenario and analysis of its regulatory, technical and environmental dimensions; ;
  • Preparation of design studies (preliminary design and detailed design) for the recommended infrastructure and services; ;
  • Conducting environmental and social impact assessments associated with the selected solutions.
Challenge

Design a master plan capable of responding to the rapid growth of the territory while integrating the entire waste management chain, from collection practices to treatment and recovery solutions, in order to propose a sustainable, high-performing organisation adapted to the local specifics of Abidjan.
