EDF – ELECTRICITE DE FRANCE

2020-2030

Flamanville, Penly, Paluel, Gravelines, Blayais, FRANCE

As part of its regulatory obligations for the monitoring of French nuclear power plants, EDF It has implemented an aerial thermal monitoring of the hot water discharges from its facilities. The thermal monitoring allows to specify the extent of the thermal plume and to interpret the influence of the physical parameters acting on the circulations of the water masses and their mixing.

The market was part of a 3-year framework agreement for the monitoring of offshore power plants, with two options for an additional 1-year period. The framework agreement was renewed for the first time in 2019, following 5 years of monitoring. A second renewal for 5 years took place in 2025. The following power plants have been subject to at least one measurement campaign: Paluel, Penly, Gravelines, Flamanville, Blayais.

Setec énergie environnement carried out temperature measurements at various sites around the power plants. To do this, a vessel was chartered and internal human and material resources were mobilized to carry out the measurement campaign simultaneously with the flight of an aircraft equipped with a thermal camera. Depending on the site, 4 or 5 probes are placed on buoys that have been prepared by us or on existing buoys. Depending on the site, setec énergie environnement mobilizes the most appropriate resources (internal or external). The processing of the collected data was carried out by our teams.

Challenge

Ensure the environmental monitoring of the thermal discharges from the French nuclear power plants in the marine environment in order to meet EDF’s regulatory requirements and improve the understanding of the phenomena of the dispersion of heated waters.

Key figure

5 coastal power plants monitored: Paluel, Penly, Gravelines, Flamanville and Blayais.
